DIY Bookmarks.

I love reading, and I love technology, but I have no desire to merge the two. I can't think of anything worse than one little electronic device replacing the traditional bookshelf, so I have not made the leap into e-reading. Hence, I own a hell of a lot of books. Whenever I'm in need of a bookmark, I always seem to end up tearing the corner off an envelope or using an old Tesco receipt - so I decided to make a few.

First, I love ribbon bookmarks, so I decided to make my own from scraps I had in my craft box. I save bits of ribbon from pyjamas, gifts, boxes - anything with a ribbon on it. I also save up broken jewellery in case it comes in handy for adding to cards or cross-stitch pictures. To create a ribbon bookmark, all you need is some ribbon, some embellishments, and a needle & thread.

To make a bookmark, fold a length of ribbon in half. Stitch the two bottom ends together about two inches from the end, then add your embellishments. To finish, fold the ends to the back & secure with stitches. Or, you can use superglue to secure it.

I also made a red one - this time, I added the embellishments to the middle of the ribbon, then tied the two ends together at the top:

They look really pretty when they're stacked, and they don't leave marks on pages either.

The last one is a "proper" ribbon bookmark that I've had for a while, I got it on eBay.

I also did some cross stitch bookmarks from patterns found on www.dorkstitch.com - Zelda & Mario:

I backed them with double-sided sticky tape, folded the sides in, then mounted them on card. They were much more time-consuming than the ribbon ones and are a little thicker - so I wouldn't recommend leaving them in a book for any colossal period of time.

Back to nails tomorrow!

OMG, that's like, so totally '90's!

I got a new stamping plate on eBay a while back even though I already have most of the patterns on other plates, but those skulls called out to me:

The first time I tried it (black on white) it looked a bit too Avril Lavigne for my liking, so this time I did what I would have done had stamping plates existed when I was about 15 - I went totally 90's with it.

Colours used were Essence L.O.L (lime) & Naughty & Pink (pink), Pumpkin Polish black, and a Rio nail art pen to go over the stamp on the black nails.

I love this stamp, I'll definitely get lots of use out of it. I couldn't wait to get those bracelets off - for someone who used to have an insane collection of friendship bracelets (made new ones every weekend) I have no idea how I wore so many, they drove me ape.

Anyone want to see a few cringey 90's photos to brighten up a Monday? There are hardly any from the late 90's, because I despise cameras, but just take my word for it that I transformed into the worst Fairuza Balk tribute act imaginable. Here are a few from the early 90's that made me giggle.

Jumpsuits and Apple Print and Sindy, oh my!!
By the by, I actually loved that blouse/skirt combo - I forsee a multicoloured apple on white background in my mani future.

Confirmation Day with Nana - nowt says 1995 like a floral dress with a hat.
I'm not going to mention the hair. A professional did that to me.
The picture that made me laugh was this next one - not taken in an Amazonian paradise (hard to believe, ain't it), but out the front garden. I have no idea what I was pretending to be here, but who doesn't love a good hat & pair of Mammy's sandals.

Ahh, nostalgia. One day I will locate that elusive Debs photo for you all (goth central) but until then, I'm off to read, watch a DVD and have a cuppa.

I'm toying with the idea of a series of NOTDs based on stuff from the 80's & 90's, anything specific you'd like to see?

Marc Jacobs Diet Coke Inspired Nails

Earlier this year, Marc Jacobs was announced as Diet Coke's new Creative Director for 2013, following in the footsteps of Jean Paul Gaultier and Karl Lagerfeld. He designed these three bottles, based on the evolution of women's fashion & empowerment through the 80's, 90's, and 00's. Here are the three designs:

We don't get the glass bottles where I am (unfortunately) but we do get the cans and the cute labels on the plastic bottles. This one came from a 2 litre bottle:

I really love the combination of colours on this - grey is one of my favourites for spring, so I saw the nail potential the minute I saw this bottle. Here's what I used:

L-R: Essence Redvolution; Sally Hansen Cherry Cherry Bang Bang!; Models Own Snow White, Barry M Black.

The base colour is Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Dorien Grey (picked up in Dealz, bargain!). The dots were made with a cotton bud (or a Q-tip, if you have no idea what a cotton bud is).

I'm not sure I like the way the bird turned out, but I definitely love the combination of the polka dots & the bow, so I'll be doing that again with different colour combinations.

Have a great Saturday,

My Nail Polish Stash (Picture Heavy)

Last year, I did a post on how I store my nail polish. Since then, the whole swatch book thing didn't really go to plan (as in I kept buying more polish and forgetting to update it) so now I just group my polish by brand. I've been meaning to do this post for ages, and I can finally do it now because I'm not waiting on any polish to arrive.

All polishes were either bought by me, swapped with other bloggers, or gifts from friends/family. Nothing was sent for review. This post doesn't include a couple of Penneys sets and a box of no-name polishes from various euro shops. Or two drawers full of nail art pens, sticky-on nails and wheels full of various glittery things. Lord save us... I have polish I didn't even know I had.

Anyone have a huge collection of anything? Go on, make me feel less weird.

Also - scariest part of this post? Knowing all the names bar seven without having to go check them...
