Glossybox 3 Month Subscription - Worth the Money?

Not Sponsored or Paid | Not an Advertisement

Hi!

A few days ago on my Facebook page, I mentioned that you can get a good deal on Glossybox at the moment if you live in Ireland but use the UK site. Currently, the 3 month subscription costs €54 on the Irish site. It's £38 if you use the UK site - £35 if you use the code "SWEET30" at the checkout. That works out to €41/€42 (depending on the exchange rate on any given day) for three boxes, delivered.

But - is it worth it?

Last year, I subscribed to Glossybox via a rolling monthly subscription. After 7 months I ended the subscription partly because the exchange rate was rising every month but mostly because I didn't feel like the products reflected the price. When a relative gave me a 3 month subscription in May, I have to admit I wasn't over the moon.

BOX ONE - STARTER BOX

I received my first box at the end of May - it wasn't the May box, that was out of stock, it was a special "Starter" box. I would have preferred to wait for the June box, but to be honest, the Starter one was pretty good. Product prices quoted are current Boots Ireland prices or where not applicable, from the brand websites.

The Starter Box contained:

Wilkinson Sword Hydro Silk Razor | Full Size | Worth €14.50
Hawaiian Tropic Satin Protection SPF 30 | Travel Mini | Worth €8
Hairon Zero Crease Hair Tie x3 | Full Size | Worth €4.80
Manna Kadar Lash Primer | Travel Size | Worth €8.50
MUA PowerPout Lip Glaze | Full Size | Worth €4.20

Total Box Worth | €40

I had previously received the razor and the lash primer in Glossyboxes last year - I loved the razor, so was really happy with that. I didn't use the lash primer first time round, probably won't use it this time. I do like the hair ties, I'm not mad about the lip gloss, I liked the Hawaiian Tropic, it smells gorgeous.

BOX TWO - JUNE 2016 BOX

The June 2016 box had five products and one bonus product. It contained:

Ladival Sun Protection Spray SPF 15 | Full Size | Worth €15
Spa To You Konjac Sponge | Full Size | Worth €9.60
De Bruyére After-Sun Lotion | Travel Size | Worth €11.40
Emité Lip & Cheek Tint | Full Size | Worth €15
Starskin Eye Catcher Eye Mask (2 Sachets) | Full Size | Worth €9.80
Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Reconstructor Hair Treatment | Single Use Sachet | Worth €1.30 (bonus)

Total Box Worth | €62.10

I thought this was a great box. I had never heard of most of the brands before, I really like Konjac sponges and eye masks. I loved the Aussie treatment, I use that anyway, and the after sun smells so lovely that I've been using it on my arms even though we haven't been having much sun. Really enjoyed this box, even though I wasn't particulary bothered about the lip tint.

BOX THREE - JULY 2016 BOX

The July box arrived today (Tuesday) and it was another really brilliant box. It contained:

Hairon De-tangle Brush | Full Size | Worth €8.40
Blank Canvas F20 Foundation Brush | Full Size | Worth €14.99
Utan and Tone Gradual Tan Night Cream | Mini Size | Worth €15
Hawaiian Tropic Lip Gloss SPF 25 | Full Size | Worth €9
Icona Milano Waterproof Mascara | Full Size | Worth €15.60

Total Box Worth | €62.99

This box also contained a recipe card from the Eat Beautiful: Nourish Your Skin Inside and Out cookbook by Wendy Rowe. I was over the moon to see the Blank Canvas brush in there - my own one broke a few months ago. The tan is an interesting concept, new mascara is always welcome, and I'll definitely try the detangling brush. I wasn't as interested in the lipgloss and I was disappointed to see a third box in a row with a pink lip product.

Overall - Glossybox have improved an awful lot since last year. I was becoming more and more irritated with the amount of lip balms and strange skincare products, but they seem to be on a roll at the minute. A great mix of makeup tools, hair care, and treatments. On the back of these three boxes, I resubscribed for another three months the other day and I'm more than happy to pay €41 for €165 worth of products. Next month is the company's fifth birthday, and they have released their "Sneak Peek" - a full sized MUA Eyeshadow Palette. If you're a subscriber, you can choose your own palette from four different ones (before July 14th, otherwise you'll receive a random selection).

PLEASE READ THIS BIT!

I'm wary of  recommending Glossybox - I've had great boxes but some woeful ones. As with anything, you do not NEED this. If you'd love a monthly treat and are prepared to pay for it, great. If you don't, please don't think I'm telling you that you're missing out - saving a tenner a month for three months and going into Boots with €30 quid in your pocket would be just as gratifying - you do not need this. If you are interested, I'd recommend it. But please don't just run and subscribe because "Sharon said I needed it" - I'm really conscious of not making people feel like they need to spend money just because others do, so think before you spend. Don't be coming back to me in a month's time telling me the August box was shite and I've made you waste money. Also, if you do subscribe for 3 months, read the terms and conditions, and make sure you cancel before your time is up unless you want to be charged at the end of the 3 months again. If you buy a monthly subscription, you may be charged for the next monthly box depending on when you cancel (I was, last year). There has been so much talk about bloggers and "digital influencers" peddling products - people need to remember that they are in charge of how they choose to spend their own money. Do not rush into things because others say they're great - think about it, read reviews, weigh up the pros and cons - every first time purchase is a risk. It's up to you whether or not you take it, nobody else!

So - what do you think? Personally I think it's a huge improvement on last year and I really hope they can maintain this standard. Less pink lip things would also be great. A little mauve would be welcome!

  1. I'm not subscribed to it but it seems to be worth it if your looking to try out beauty products every month.
