O.P.I - Shine For Me (Fifty Shades of Grey Collection)

No, your eyes aren't deceiving you, I have actually managed to cobble a nail polish post together. Rejoice!!!

As we all know, the very highly anticipated movie version of E.L James' literary masterpiece (tongue very firmly in cheek) is due for release on Valentines' Day 2015.

I'm not going to rant about how sexist or misogynistic the whole franchise is, or how much I hate it, or what bad role models the characters are, or how Christian Grey is in fact one of the most manipulative psychopaths of all time, not helped by the fact that a lot of people are making comparisons between both him and Jamie Dornan's other most famous character Paul Spector - nope. I'm taking this down to a purely superficial cosmetic level. The polish.

Just before Christmas, Nail Polish Direct sent out a tweet looking for pictures of Winter/Christmas nail art. I submitted a picture from last year - this one:

Stumpy Thumb Alert

A day or two later, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a tweet letting me know that Nail Polish Direct had very generously decided to send a prize out to everyone who had replied with a picture. I gave them my Parcel Motel address and was over the moon to receive this on Christmas Eve - one of the new O.P.I polishes from their upcoming "Fifty Shades of Grey" collaboration.

This is "Shine for Me".

Yes, I still have the book. I don't know why. Genuinely.

Shine For Me is difficult to describe. It actually reminds me a lot of Moony from the Lac Attack Magical Mischief (Harry Potter) collection (swatched here). It's a complex polish, made up of several different shades - of blue, surprisingly.

It's a gritty foil-like polish, but not too gritty. It's not as textured as the O.P.I Liquid Sand polishes. Application was a breeze - it was one of the quickest-drying polishes I've used in a long time! My husband remarked that it "didn't stink the house out like all the other ones" - it didn't get a chance to, because each coat dried within a few minutes. The pictures below are all 3 coats, no topcoat. I'm on day 3 now and I haven't had any tipwear or chipping at all.

Discovered Macro mode on my camera today after four years. Sharp as a tack, me.

I love this polish. My husband loves this polish, which is a rare occurrence! I do think it's a little bit too cool-toned for my skin, but it is lovely. It has just enough texture to keep it interesting, but it's not so textured that it's distracting. I didn't use a topcoat because I like the finish, but I'm sure a topcoat would bring the sparkle out even more.

The full collection looks like this:

There will also be a set of minis containing all 6 shades, which is brilliant.

I definitely think I hit the jackpot with my prize colour - it's by far the most interesting in the collection. I love the look of "Embrace the Gray" too, but I'll wait until I see some more swatches to make my mind up.

Thanks so much to Nail Polish Direct for such a kind surprise, it was a lovely addition to my Christmas Eve.

The Limited Edition O.P.I Fifty Shades of Grey collection is available from usual O.P.I stockists now.

  1. Very pretty set of polishes and I love the name of them!

    1. They do look nice, I love a good grey polish!

  2. I saw a swatch video the other day with all polishes from this collection and you def hit the jackpot, it's the best in the bunch! It reminds me something though, will have to dig through my collection and see if it's an actual polish I own or if I'm just imagining it!

    1. It really, really reminds me of that Lac Attack one. I must swatch them side-by-side and see! Let me know if you find out what it is!

  3. Very pretty and unusual, love it! :) x

    1. It was actually really nice on, I got 4 days out of it too without chips or tipwear which was good with no topcoat :)x

  4. Wow that polish is lovely, it's a bit different

    1. It's nice to see O.P.I doing something a bit different after so many cream polishes lately x

  5. That's actually a very pretty shade! Liking the look of the minis, just not sure I can actually use polishes with names like "dark side of the mood", I think I'd just be thinking "what a prick" Christian Grey is.
