Neon.....and on....and on....

Hi!

I'm not usually one for following trends, but this neon thing has really gripped me of late. I can safely say I've never worn as much colour as I have in the last month or two - I don't know if it's just because it reminds me of the 90's, or it's the good weather - but I can not get enough of neon. Now - here's a question. What do you do when you love a trend, but you:

A) Haven't a clue about fashion, styling, or how to put things together.
B) Haven't a huge budget.
C) Are five months pregnant and busting out of clothes faster than the Hulk.

You focus on accessories and accents!

I'm going to get the clothes end of this out of the way now - good old Penneys (Primark) comes up trumps in that department once more. With regard to sizing - I have yet to learn what kind of elusive creature Penneys use as a standard size measure, because I genuinely have stuff ranging from a size 14 to a 20 that all fit. I'll go through the sizes here too for reference.

I can't remember the exact price but the first two were around €4-€5 each and the white one was €6.
The first two tops have absolutely no give in them whatsoever, they're tight enough and I know they won't fit me in another month. My pre-pregnancy top size would be a 16 but I got all three in an 18 to give my bump a bit more room. If you're between sizes, go for the larger one. The white top is an absolute godsend for those of us who don't like to get our arms out - it's see-through, lightweight, and seriously stretchy. It's one of the most comfortable tops I've ever bought and it's long enough to cover my bump. I got it in an 18, but it would easily fit a 20 or 22. Definitely getting a few more!

Crafty Tip: You know those annoying ribbons that are always on vest tops to hang them up? You can either cut the loop in half and use them to tie the vest to your bra strap & stop it slipping down, or you can cut them off altogether and use them as another neon accessory - a hair tie.

Next up - accessories.

Necklace (orange) - New Look, €7.99. Necklace (neon yellow) - Penneys, €5. Socks - Penneys, 5 pairs for €3. Neon green unicorn earring - 75c, ebay. Large ball earrings (random colours supplied) - 5 pairs for 75c, ebay.

New Look have some amazing necklaces at the minute - at the time I got that necklace, it was BOGOF on all jewellery so I picked up another studded necklace (non-neon). With regard to the eBay earrings, the backs supplied with those candy ball ones were useless, really loose - but the little clear plastic extra ones that Penneys put on all their earring packs fit perfectly. The unicorn one looked great online but looked ridiculous in my ear so I've been using it as a brooch/pin. Penneys also have some brilliant bracelets at the moment - all of the non-jelly ones in this post are still available.

Lastly (my favourite part) - nail polish.

Kiwi Cool-Ada and Celtic Sun are not new releases, but Bottoms Up is part of the Summer 2013 Sunsational collection. The collection includes 6 jellies and 6 cremes - Bottoms Up is one of the cremes.

Celtic Sun definitely needs to be layered over white - I tried it with a clear basecoat and after 6 coats it still wasn't opaque - it's definitely a jelly. Kiwi Cool-Ada is buildable but streaky to apply so needs a good topcoat. I've had to adjust the colours of the swatches a bit to try and show you as accurately as I can, but be assured - all three are NEON. Seriously neon.

Apologies for the application here - I genuinely didn't notice it until I'd uploaded and edited. The polish is really runny and takes a while to build up. This is streaky-looking close up, but it's not as noticeable in reality. This is SO insanely bright - did you ever paint your nails with tipp-ex in school then colour them in with a yellow highlighter? That's exactly what this colour is. The above picture was with one coat of white, three coats of Celtic Sun, and one coat of Poshé topcoat.

Bottoms Up is an incredible neon creme, it's a true Barbie pink and I adore it on my nails. It didn't give me any huge problems with application but it is a neon, so it dries to that weird rubbery finish - it does need a topcoat to smooth it out and give it a bit of gloss. The above was with three coats of Bottoms Up and one coat of Poshé.

I've already spoken about how the formula of this one wrecks my head, but the colour payoff at the end is worth the effort. This is another streaky, rubbery formula, but it's easily evened out with a topcoat. The above picture was four coats of Kiwi Cool-Ada and an Essence topcoat.

So - how do you do neon?

  1. Neon looks better on me when I'm wearing tan, which is hardly ever. I really like the pink nail polish

People keep saying "oh look you're ready to pop" and I'm all like "erm... i have ten weeks to go"
